When listening to Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter John Paul, it is hard to guess he only recently turned 23. His songs and voice display a musical maturity rarely seen at his age. His style ranges from Folk and Americana to pure Rock, but the depth of emotion conveyed by his resonant tenor voice never changes.
In July 2010 Paul will release his latest EP, “Combination,” recorded with his band “The Courtship” in his native Maine with renowned producer Jonathan Wyman, who has worked with countless Maine artists, including Ray Lamontagne. Combination’s arena-rock sound is reminiscent of Kings of Leon, yet is unmistakably John Paul, with undertones of Americana twang, and his signature introspective tone. But it’s the catchy melodies and powerful choruses that you’ll notice first. The title track lures listeners with a simple verse and beat, and then explodes with John belting over guitars and backing vocals. The upbeat tempo and melody on “Always on the Run” belie the tune’s world-weary story, showcasing John’s knack for mixing emotional content with irresistible music.
Combination represents a departure from the style of Paul’s 2008 debut, Belmont Boulevard, which displays John’s strength on the Folk and Americana end of the spectrum. Even though Belmont Boulevard was recorded in Nashville, Tennessee, the Maine connection persisted through producer and Portland, Maine resident Tom Acousti. The album was recorded with some of Americanas heavy hitters such as pedal steel/electric guitarist Dan Dugmore (Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor, Neil Diamond, Tim McGraw), drummer Brad Pemberton (Ryan Adams and The Cardinals), bassist Billy Mercer (Ryan Adams, Mindy Smith, Matthew Ryan). Pemberton said Belmont Boulevard "is a fantastic collection of songs reminiscent of Ryan Adams and Paul Westerberg. Excellent songs, great hooks, and honest delivery.” Dan Dugmore, former musical director of Linda Ronstadt says: "Belmont Boulevard was one of my favorite records to play on."
Since moving to Los Angeles in 2009, Paul has been independently dominating the singer-songwriter scene. He has been Featured on KCAL9 (LA CBS affiliate) via Skipstone Productions' show "So Cal NOW,” has performed at the UCB Theater as a special guest musician and has brought large crowds to New York City, Boston, Portland, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles.
