SONGWRITERS BIOGRAPHY
Having composed music over the past 25 years, John debuted his work at The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra's Sonic Circus in 1987.

He then formed his band Slacker. Residencies were held at DeBretts, El Sabor and Cause Celebre alongside Nathan Haines' Jazz Committee. Slacker were a regular with many Jazz Festivals, played a live to air performance on BFM's Jazz show and featured at the BFM Private Function.

After outgrowing Slacker, John OZ went on to pursue a recording project Freaker, a jazz collective featuring many of Auckland's finest musicians. Their EP 2 Birds from Sexville found a receptive audience with Bnet stations, enjoying frequent airplay.

A recording contract with Deepgrooves soon followed, confirmation of his foray into the music world. The association with Deepgrooves was varied, John OZ arranging horn parts and recruiting session players for the album Kia Koe by Sulata as well as working as a recording engineer for many Deepgrooves' artists and radio show Tribal Beats. However only weeks before Freaker's album Molto Rubato was due to be mastered the recording company went bust.

A blow at the time, John OZ made a departure into the film industry and has been working since 1998 as a model maker/props designer to much acclaim. Music though has never been far from his thoughts. In recent years he has been working with Kingsley Melhuish to create a set of natural labrophonic instruments from conch and helmet shells. In between film sets he has composed and recorded music for himself and many others.
