In 2008, as Thievery Corporation was making their latest album Radio Retaliation with world famous artists including Brazilian star vocalist and guitarist Seu Jorge, Anoushka Shankar, Femi Kuti and Chuck Brown, Jana Andevska was invited to record as well. The song “Beautiful drug” Jana sang and played violin on became the best selling song of the album on iTunes. The album has been nominated for a Grammy.
A classically trained violinist, born in Slovakia with Macedonian roots, Jana studied at the Conservatory of Music and Academy of Music in Bratislava, Slovakia. After moving to New York she received her Master Degree diploma in Violin Performance. Shortly after she performed with chamber and symphonic orchestras in venues such as Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center New York. She was also on the faculty of the Greenwich House Music School in Manhattan and the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music.
While living in the big Apple, her heart made a move and expressed what was Jana’s long time passion and desire: she sang and wrote her first song. Since then she has combined her classical background, which she describes as ” a beautiful box of rules and perfectionism,” with the “freedom” of her own compositions; her own rules, her own melodies and the words she was never able to express. This moment of transformation immediately suited her and she started performing in the downtown scene of New York City singing and playing her songs on piano, guitar and violin.
On her own she produced and arranged her first album Bright Avenues (released 2014), and recorded vocals, guitars, piano and violins in her East Village apartment in Manhattan, New York, with the help of wonderful friends and musicians, Barry Reynolds – songwriter (Grace Jones, Marianne Faithfull) and Mauro Refosco – drums / percussions (Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Atoms for Piece)
She continues her writing, perfoming and teaching all around the world.
